Erika Taylor
Drug & Alcohol Counseling
Erika Taylor wanted to make a change in her life and go back to school. She had learned from friends about Delaware Tech's financial aid program, which encouraged her to take a chance and apply. Soon after, she learned that she qualified.
Taylor's decision to enroll in the drug & alcohol counseling program was an easy one. From watching those in her life struggling with substance abuse firsthand, she knew there was a need for genuine people to help with this ongoing epidemic.
"It hits close to home. I wanted to be on the front lines of this issue because it's not getting any better," Taylor said. "They need people who care and who are in it for the right reasons, not just for a paycheck."
During her time at Delaware Tech, Taylor said she experienced, "the best teachers she could ask for" and classes that helped her navigate the field in the real world. She credits Instructors Silja Walter and Larry Merchant, in particular, as well as a couple courses that really stood out to her.
"In my job, I have to do a lot of talking now, and my Motivational Interviewing class helped prepare me. My psychology courses have also been important in helping me work through the field," Taylor said.
Taylor works in the Department of Corrections where every day she gets to do what she loves. Her favorite parts of the job are interacting with the residents and being a part of their recovery.
Taylor's long-term goal is to pursue her doctorate and make helping people with addiction her life mission. She dreams of being a licensed counselor and, eventually, owning her own counseling service.
