After taking on a regular babysitting job during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kylie Kruger decided becoming a teacher was the career path for her.
"I've always loved working with children and now I want to make a difference in their lives," Kruger said. "Once I started taking care of these kids I felt like, as much as I've been able to help them, if I became a teacher I could help more kids like them."
Kruger said she would prefer to teach kindergarten-second grade, and feels like the elementary education program at Delaware Tech is fully preparing her for that job.
"The observations and lesson planning that are part of the program will really help me out when I start teaching," she said.
Since she started at the College, Kruger has noticed she does a better job managing her team and staying organized. She believes those are two key skills to being successful in college.
"Time management is something I would tell other students that could improve their grades," Kruger said. "It is all about prioritizing certain things that matter. For example, I know I want to get a 4.0 GPA. In order to achieve this goal, I have to have good study habits and great time management skills."
Kruger also has to balance being a member of Delaware Tech's softball team. In her first season, Kruger was one of the team's best hitters, had a perfect fielding percentage while playing four different infield positions, earned all-region honors, and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player at the end of the year. She played a key role in Delaware Tech returning to the national softball tournament for the second year in a row.
"My favorite memory so far was traveling to the national tournament in Alabama," Kruger said. "We were able to attend a University of Alabama softball game and tour Talladega Speedway, and it was something I will never forget."
Upon graduating in the spring of 2022, Kruger plans to apply for Delaware Tech's Bachelor of Science in Education program to continue her education.
"I believe that program will help my future by getting all of the education I'll need to be successful in the classroom," she said.
